Current and emerging HIS-humanized animal models. To construct HIS-humanized mice and rats, immunodeficient mice and rats are myoablated, followed by engraftment of human lymphoid tissues (thymus with or without human spleen) under the kidney capsule, along with injection of autologous human CD34+ hematopoietic stem cells. In representative images, we show the engrafted human lymphoid tissues (human thymus xenograft-thymus, white tissue; human spleen xenograft-Spleen, dark brown tissue and the reconstituted rodent-spleen (humanized spleen-hSpleen). Note: mouse and rat organs are not at the same scale
