ALV-J inhibited the production of IgM+ and IgG+ cells in vivo. a and d Tissue sections of the bursas of Fabricius and spleens obtained from chickens (n = 36) infected at ED 6 or mock-infected chickens (n = 36) were stained by IHC using rabbit anti-IgM/IgG antibody. In these tests, the bursas of Fabricius and spleens were sampled at 6 time points (six samples were collected per time point). In infected chickens, the number of IgM+ or IgG+ cells in the bursa of Fabricius and spleen were fewer than those in the mock-infected chickens. Sections were stained by DAB (Brown) or AEC (red) and counterstained by haematoxylin (magnification: × 400). Arrow shows the bursal follicles. b and c Quantitation of IgM- or IgG−positive products in the bursa of Fabricius. e and f Quantitation of IgM- or IgG−positive products in the spleen; *p < 0.05, **p < 0.01, ***p < 0.001, two-way ANOVA was performed. g and h ELISA of total IgM and IgG levels in the blood of infected or control chickens; *p < 0.05, **p < 0.01, ***p < 0.001, two-way ANOVA was performed
