  1. The 33 most intact chains with respect to envelope genes, sorted according to number of shifts and stops in env. The criterion for inclusion was a maximum of 1 shift or stop in env. Because of its publication record (see e.g. Hervé et al. [99] and Fei et al. [100]) a HERV3 chain with 2 stops in env was also included. Format: “Stops/shifts” are shown for the four major frames. Abbreviations are as in Table 5. Envgroup2 is the envelope group classification shown in Additional file 1: Table S1.
