RHA stimulates HIV-1 protein translation. Translation initiation factor eIF4E binds to the 5′cap structure of HIV-1 RNA together with eIF4G and eIF4A1 in the context of the eIF4F translation initiation complex, which further recruits the 43S ribosomal complex to the mRNA. RHA binds to the R/U5 region of HIV-1 RNA and is proposed to assist the 43S ribosomal complex to scan the HIV-1 5′UTR and locate the translation start codon AUG.
