  1. - animal is prepubertal (no active spermatogenesis)
  2. + animal is early pubertal (early meiotic cells only in the seminiferous epithelium)
  3. ++ animal is late pubertal (elongating spermatids in seminiferous tubules, but no sperm in epididymis)
  4. +++ animal is sexually mature (full spermatogensis in the seminiferous tubules and sperm in the epididymal lumen)
