Distinctive patterns of restriction are due to the types of primate TRIM5α isoform and the type of circulating SIV capsid that is targeted. (A) Restriction profiles of different primate TRIM5α isoforms against circulating SIV CA are determined in control CHO cells or CHO cells stably expressing (A) the human, (B) the chimpanzee, (C) the rhesus, or (D) the African green monkey TRIM5α proteins. Virion preparation and infection efficiency were as described in the legend of Figure 2. Additional control virions were used, including those with the CA of TRIM5α-susceptible N-tropic MLV (MLV-N) and TRIM5α-resistant MLV-B. Results were obtained from at least three independent experiments for each combination. Unpaired two-tailed Student’s t-test was used to assess significance. SEM and P-values are indicated (** P < 0.01; *** P < 0.001).
